The South Korean government and the ruling People Power Party (PPP) announced on Wednesday their decision to designate January 27 as a temporary holiday this year, aiming to stimulate domestic consumption and tourism during the Lunar New Year, known as Seollal.

This year’s Seollal holiday officially runs from January 28 to 30. The inclusion of January 27 as a temporary holiday creates an extended break of six days from January 25 to 30. Moreover, if you take leave on January 31, you can enjoy an extended nine-day holiday, stretching through February 2.

Rep. Kim Sang-hoon, the PPP’s chief policymaker, revealed the decision following a policy consultation meeting at the National Assembly. He expressed optimism that the extended break would boost private consumption, promote domestic tourism, and alleviate traffic congestion.

Seollal is one of South Korea's most significant holidays, where families gather to honor ancestors through traditional rituals and spend quality time together. The additional holiday offers more opportunities for South Koreans to travel or relax, enhancing overall well-being while supporting economic activity.

Happy New year everyone!!
