반응형

Hello, fellow expats!  Do you plan on studying in South Korea? I started this blog in Korean, but today, I will be posting in English for readers who are living South in Korea or for anyone who wants to visit. 🌏 Majority of the Korean posts can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're not fluent in the language. So, if you are still learning 한글 and the skills are a work in progress, worry not! 🇰🇷📚✨ This blog post will include tips and tricks that can help your application process go smoothly.

Deciding to study in South Korea is exciting, thrilling, and life-changing based on my experience. However, applying for a D2 visa is quite confusing and conflicting. That is why it is essential to understand the student visa or simply D2 visa, A D2 visa is specifically designed for foreign students who want to higher education in the country. (A Masters student or PhD student visa).

Please note that aspiring students from different countries encounter different information and experiences due to the diverse diplomatic relationship each country maintains with South Korea. This blog post is tailored based on my D2-visa application experience from the Philippines. Moreover, each university has its own system for inviting, and accepting incoming international students and they may impose different requirements.

Understanding the D-2 Visa
The D-2 visa is a student visa granted to individuals who wish to enroll in academic programs at universities or other accredited educational institutions in South Korea. Whether you're pursuing your Master's or PhD degree, the D-2 visa is your gateway to worldwide higher education training. Keep in mind that there are different types of D-2 visas. In my case, I have the classic D-2 visa, which is given to full-time degree students. While exchange students get a D-2-6 visa and summer or winter school students get a D-2-8 visa.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a D-2 visa, you must meet certain eligibility criteria.

  • Acceptance into an Educational Institution: You need to be admitted to a recognized educational institution in South Korea. This can be a university, or any other accredited establishment offering educational programs.
  • Financial Capability: You must have the financial means to cover your tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses during your stay in Korea. While there are scholarships, it is best to show that you can support yourself too during your stay in Korea.
  • Health Insurance: It is mandatory to have health insurance that covers your medical expenses while in Korea. Many universities assist students in obtaining the necessary health insurance. The health insurance is quite expensive but it is all worth it. I will make a separate post about it.

Application Process
Once you've secured admission to a Korean educational institution, the next step is to apply for a D-2 visa. The application process involves several steps:

  • Collect Required Documents: Gather the necessary documents, including your acceptance letter. The university will send it to you via post mail. I received mine two weeks after I got an acceptance email from the University. Make sure that you write your home address clearly and you will be available to receive it. Only you can receive it. (Well in my case).  Once you have your acceptance letter from the University in South Korea, the application for the D-2 visa needs submitted and completed through the Korean Embassy in your home country.  You also need proof of financial capability, NBI clearance, and a completed visa application form. Some countries need health check-ups including Tuberculosis, and the Philippines is one on the list. Tip: While waiting for your acceptance letter, gather all other requirements, as some Philippine agencies need time to release your documents too, especially the NBI clearance!!!
  • Visit the Korean Embassy or Consulate: Submit your application to the Korean embassy or consulate in your home country. Make sure to check their specific requirements and processing times. Tip: Confirm the application delivery times with your local Korean embassy! You may come early too. Also, note that the Korean Embassy may follow Korean and local holidays. So you need to be aware of Seollal (which is usually during February), Chuseok (which is around September or October), and other Korean public holidays.
  • Visa Interview: Some applicants may be required to attend a visa interview. Be prepared to discuss your study plans and provide additional information about your intentions in Korea. In my case, I only left the requirements and was asked to come back after a week.
  • Wait for Approval: After submitting your application, you'll need to wait for the visa processing to be completed. Once approved, you can collect your visa and start preparing for your journey to Korea.

Perks of the D-2 Visa
The D-2 visa is a single-entry visa but it comes with several benefits for international students:

  • Legal stay in the country: The length of stay matches the study period listed on your admission certificate. Once you arrive in South Korea, you will need to apply for your Alien Registration Card (ARC) and this is your ticket to going in and out of the country. I will make a separate post about it.
  • Part-time Work: Holders of the D-2 visa are allowed to work part-time during their studies, enabling them to gain valuable work experience and supplement their finances. PhD students are a different story. Working part-time when you are taking PhD is quite tricky, This calls for another blog as well.
  • Opportunity for Extension: If you wish to continue your studies or pursue additional courses, the D-2 visa can be extended until you graduate.
  • Post-Graduation Stay: After completing your program, you have the option to stay in Korea for a certain period to seek employment or explore other opportunities.

The D-2 visa opens doors to a world of academic and cultural exploration in South Korea. By understanding the eligibility criteria, application process, and the perks it offers, you can embark on your Korean adventure with confidence. As you prepare for your studies, make the most of this opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Korean education and society. For me, I  found the experience rewarding. If I could just stay longer on the D2 visa I would.  Safe travels and enjoy your time in Korea!
